Year 13 roving reporter for 2009, we need 2010 articles soon

Year 13 Report 15/5/09

The Year 13's have started Term 2 with a few trips South. The Biology class travelled to Portabello to study the crab. They stayed on Quarantine Island and travelled by boat onto the mainland. There were two other schools there which they interacted well with. The students all enjoyed themselves, despite the cold weather!

The next week, the majority of Year 13's spent the day at Otago University , checking out what they have to offer and actually sitting in on some of the lectures. Only one serious incident happened on the trip and that was Jarrod Morgan tripping on the escalator and damaging his knee.

The Under 18 boy's rugby team have had a super start to the season. Last week they played Timaru Boys High Seconds and won 15 – 10. They have a home match this weekend against Temuka.

A reminder that the Smokefree Wearable Arts is being held on the 28 th May at the Waimate High School Hall. It's not too late to enter so pick up an entry form from the Resource Centre of Mandy's Bridal Shop. Everyone is welcome to come and watch for just a gold coin donation.

Year 13 Report 20/2/09

2009, a new school year and with that comes a new group of Year 13 students. Being a seventh former is both exciting and tiring, trying to balance the responsibility given to them as seniors also working hard to gain NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance.

The small group of Year 13's at Waimate High School have had a busy start to the year. They gave up two days during the end of the holidays to attend a peer support camp at Gunn's Bush. Everyone worked well showing leadership skills and they have put their new skills to the test working for one hour each week with their groups of Year 7 students.

They have also had interviews for the prefect positions. This is a big responsibilty and we congratulate the eight students who earned this role.

A busy year is ahead for these students and I will keep you updated!

Year 13 Report 6/3/09
The Year 13's have yet again had a super busy fortnight with many different events going on, as well as their school work.
Athletics had been postponed which gave them more time to focus on their other responsibilities. The four Prefects attended a morning tea last Friday at Roncalli College to meet the other Prefects in the Timaru area.
Year 13 Sports Prefect, James Morgan, flew to Hamilton on Tuesday to compete in the National Trapshooting Competition. His results will be announced when he returns.
The Relay for Life Team “Lock n' Load” had a Sausage Sizzle on Thursday for a fundraiser.
Mr Thompson and Mrs Packman took the small Geography class to Karitane on Sunday to study coastal processes. They spent most of the three days studying the waves, tides and the beach itself. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves although staying up till late to finish their written work did not go down too well. This trip will help them to pass their end of year exam with flying colours.

Australia Tour for U16 Cricket team

In December last year Waimate High School went to an Under 16 Cricket team to Brisbane for a one week cricket tournament. The team will be made up of the schools' successful Fourth Grade team and some of the promising junior A grade cricketers. Waimate High School was invited to this tournament through the International promotion of the Southern Skies organisation.

The goal of the coach, Justin Thompson, is to develop Waimate cricket up to a more competitive level when competing in local National tournaments ie The Gillette Cup. The squad has started preparations with training one day a week and also several players are taking part in South Canterbury winter cricket training. As we move closer to summer Mr Thompson will invite other Waimate High School students keen on developing skills in cricket to join in the training sessions.

The team is very grateful for the support from their parents and local community who have supported their fundraising so far and look forward to their continued support.

Mr Thompson is looking for some help in finding teams for the squad to play in preparation games. These can be other schools or clubs teams and games will take place on Sundays in November. If you think you have a team that would be interested please contact Justin Thompson at Waimate High School.

STRONG PERFORMANCE BY HIGH SCHOOL NETBALLERS

The 25th July saw the WHS Year 9/10 Timaru Netball Team face Opihi B. With Captain Tyla Stevenson forced to watch from the sideline with a fractured elbow, the team knew they would have to perform to challenge the second placed Opihi team. Waimate had a consistent first half and were satisfied to be level at 9 all at half time. As the game continued Waimate appeared to reach their pressure absorption limit and errors started to creep into the game. A tall Opihi goal shoot proved difficult to combat and Opihi sealed a solid 25 to 17 win.

Dominique Weir was having a fantastic game at goal keep, disrupting play on numerous occasions in what could have been her best game of the season so far. Unfortunately an untimely fall and injured ankle meant Dominique had to retire from the court early in the third quarter leaving Waimate to play the remainder of the game with just 6 players. Victoria Wilson changed from her usual WD to WA and looked comfortable in the extra space helping get the ball down the court. Emily Powell showed continued improvement in her positional play at WA then C. Last but not least, our shooters showed character to perform under pressure. Steph Drake drove strongly from Goal Shoot to be an option for a pass to get the ball into the circle and Zoe Mehrtens landed some lovely goals as the confidence soared. The final score was an emphatic 24 to 18 win which was well deserved and immensely satisfying for players and supporters alike. While tempting to start with just six players, we hope to have at the luxury of eight fit girls for this weeks game against our grade leaders, Nova Energy COG.
